Using surplus solar power to charge your electric vehicle comes with these key benefits

Environmental benefits

Reduce your carbon footprint and create the ultimate sustainability in your energy use.

Economic benefits

Surplus solar charging is an investment that continues to pay off in saved electricity costs.

Become independent from the grid

Eliminate your reliance on the grid and traditional electricity with a solar charging solution.

Here’s how EV chargers work

EV chargers utilise the surplus solar power that’s generated to charge your electric vehicle. Basically, your home’s rooftop solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. That energy is then supplied to the house loads via the inverter and stored in a battery system, if you have one, or surplus is fed back into the grid. Once an EV charger is installed with a new circuit back to the switchboard then that surplus solar power can be used to directly charge your electric vehicle avoiding the need to import any electricity from the grid to charge the car.

EV chargers are pretty straightforward and offer simplicity and sustainability. They allow EV drivers to create the ultimate sustainability in their driving — often, this is that missing piece for EV drivers.

Have a question about EV charging your electric vehicle?

EV chargers for electric vehicles utilise the surplus solar energy from the solar system. This solar energy is then converted into electrical power via the inverter, which is then either stored in a battery system and the surplus solar power can then be controlled to charge your electric vehicle via the EV charger app settings. This process ensures a green and efficient way to power your vehicle, utilising renewable energy sources.

Yes, most modern EV chargers are designed to be compatible with a wide range of electric vehicle models. This includes popular models compatible with Fronius Wattpilot, Solar Edge, and ABB, as well as BMW and Tesla chargers. However, it is important to check the specifications of your EV and the EV charger to ensure compatibility, as connectors and charging capacities may vary between different brands and models.

The installation process typically involves a few key steps. The first is understanding what kind of charger best suits your needs — or getting a rough idea. The next is consulting with a solar specialist like 3D Energy. We’ll need to investigate the switchboard capacity for a new EV charging circuit, location of EV charger, cable route and length of type to type 2 charging lead.  The last step is the installation and quality assurance checks.

Our professional installers will ensure the system is safely and efficiently set up and demonstrate how to use the new charging setup.

The charging time for an electric vehicle using a EV charger can vary based on several factors, including the battery capacity of the vehicle, the power output of the solar charger, 1 phase or 3 phase charging capacity and weather conditions if utulising the surplus solar power charging function (recommended). On average, a EV charger can take several hours to fully charge an electric vehicle. However, on days with plenty of sunlight and surplus solar power, the charging process can be faster, whereas on cloudy or rainy days, it may take longer.

Many governments in Australia offer incentives, tax credits, or rebates for installing solar EV chargers as part of their efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. These incentives can vary by region and change over time. Definitely look into your local agencies or the relevant government departments for the most current information on available incentives for solar EV charger installation.
